The International Day for Women in Maritime has been set as May 18th every year.
The move is by the International Maritime Organization, which passed a resolution with the date at its 32nd annual session. The resolution also calls for IMO member states to promote and celebrate the role women play in the maritime sector.
The long-term goal of the event is to encourage recruitment and more participation by women in the maritime sector.
Commenting on the resolution, Kitack Lim, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, said:
“This day for women in the maritime sector will contribute to the achievement of SDG 5 on gender equality. It is a fantastic follow-up to the Assembly resolution approved in 2019 and the 2019 subject of empowering women in maritime. I am glad that the Member States have joined the call for a barrier-free environment for women, so that all women can fully participate in the maritime community’s activities, including seafaring and shipbuilding, in a safe and unhindered manner.”
